“Reporting” on Iran should seem familiar

By Glenn Greenwald | March 31, 2010

Fox News currently has an article at the top of its website that is headlined:  “CIA: Iran Moving Closer to Nuclear Weapon.”  The report, by DOD and State Department correspondent Justin Fishel, begins with this alarming claim:

A recently published report by the Central Intelligence Agency says Iran is still working on building a nuclear weapon despite some technical setbacks and international resistance — and the Pentagon say it’s still concerned about Iran’s ambitions.

But, as blogger George Maschke notes, that statement is categorically false.  The actual report, to which the Fox article links and which the DNI was required by Congress to submit, says no such thing.  Rather, this is its core finding:

The report says the opposite of Fox’s statement that “Iran is still working on building a nuclear weapon.”  And, of course, the 2007 National Intelligence Estimate which concluded that Iran ceased development of its weapons program has never been rescinded, and even the most hawkish anonymous leaks from inside the intelligence community, when bashing the 2007 NIE, merely claim that analysts “now believe that Iran may well have resumed ‘research’ on nuclear weapons — theoretical work on how to design and construct a bomb — but that Tehran is not engaged in ‘development’ — actually trying to build a weapon.

This misleading “reporting” is hardly confined to Fox News.  Reporting on Obama’s efforts to secure international sanctions, Reuters today makes this claim:

[E]evidence has mounted raising doubts about whether Tehran is telling the truth when it says its nuclear program is only to produce peaceful atomic energy.

Particularly damning was a report in February from the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, that said Iran may be working to develop a nuclear-armed missile.

… Meanwhile, The New York Times’ David Sanger — who is the Judy Miller of Iran when it comes to hyping the “threat” based overwhelmingly, often exclusively, on anonymous sources — continues his drum beat this week.  In an article co-written with William Broad, Sanger warns — “based on interviews with officials of several governments and international agencies” (“all” of whom “insisted on anonymity”) — that “international inspectors and Western intelligence agencies say they suspect that Tehran is preparing to build more sites in defiance of United Nations demands.”  But rather than the secret, nefarious scheme which the NYT depicts this as being, these plans for additional sites were publicly announced — by the Iranian government itself — many weeks ago.As I’ve noted before, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Iran wanted a nuclear weapons capability.  If anything, it would be irrational for them not to want one.  What else would a rational Iranian leader conclude as they look at the U.S. military’s having destructively invaded and continuing to occupy two of its neighboring, non-nuclear countries (i.e., being surrounded by an invading American army on both its Eastern and Western borders)?  Add to that the fact that barely a day goes by without Western media outlets and various Western elites threatening them with a bombing attack by the U.S. or the Israel (which itself has a huge stockpile of nuclear weapons and categorically refuses any inspections or other monitoring).  If our goal were to create a world where Iran was incentivized to obtain nuclear weapons, we couldn’t do a better job than we’re doing now.

But regardless of one’s views on that question, or on the question of what the U.S. should do (if anything) about Iranian proliferation, the first order of business ought to be ensuring that the reporting on which we base our views is accurate.  A CNN poll from February found that 59% of Americans favor military action against Iran if negotiations over their nuclear program fail (see questions 31-32) — and that’s without the White House even advocating such a step.  As the invasion of Iraq demonstrated, the kind of fear-mongering, reckless, and outright false “reporting” we’re seeing already — and have been seeing for awhile — over Iran’s nuclear program poses a far greater danger to the U.S. than anything Iran could do.

  1. Considering that CNN is owned and controlled by Zionists with roots to the Rothschilds , it is a clear sign that the decision to attack Iran was already made including the False Flag that will force US into the next war .
So following the same Media routine since WW2 this is a necessary step to brainwash the American public and it works , see the 50% pro war response in pols .
By the time the radioactive rods will be installed in the Busher nuclear reactor the US public will be “ready” .

Is this a representation of the average American IQ ?

  2. We’ve seen it all before. and of course, the SHEEPLE, in this forsaken torture gulag are so fucking lame and pissing their collective pants, that when the first bombs fall on Teheran and other targets, or the ‘false flag’ attack to justify it is done by the MOSSAD just like Sept. 11th. 2001 was, they’ll be sitting on their couch’s, watching ‘maricon idol’ and playing with their fucking dingle watsis’ and eating ‘Cheetohs’ like they’re going out of style. But, none of them will be concerned, because SOMEONE ELSES KID IS GOING TO DIE THERE ANYWAY!!! :)

wo why should the SHEEPLE give a shit? It’s an all volunteer mercenary force for the CORPORATIONS and the ROTHSCHILDS, so why should they give a shit?

they won’t. Iran will be attacked. Millions of people will die in the ensuing war, and the idiots will sit on their fat complacent asses and do not one fucking thing but wring their hands and piss and moan and keep jacking off to their stupid television sets.

it’s sad, but true. Intelligent, caring, human beings would react differently, but after all, this is AMERIKA, isn’t it?? Land of the TORTURE MONGERS and SURVEILLANCE and INFINITE POLICE POWERS. :)

  4. Glen Greenwald says,`If anything, it would be irrational for them not to want one`.

Meaning it would be rational for them to want one.

No, Mr Greenwald, it wouldn’t be rational at all, for the reason that they dare not use it should they have it, as it would save USrael from having to do the usual false flag routine – but with a nuke this time.

Far better not to seek to build one lest the Zionist media gleefully confirm that this is so giving them the pretext they need to do a WMD Mk2 campaign – WMD Mk1 was Iraq in 03, neither of which is/was plausible anyway for the reason that one nuke cannot ever be a deterrent, it can only be a pretext for obliteration with hundreds of USrael nukes.

Mr Geenwald is really on the side of nuking Iran – the give away, the poison pill, is that one line i started with.

Shows him to be hasbara guy, and he’s very good at it.

    • michael,

Greenwald was wrong about claiming it would be “rational” for Iran to obtain nukes, but your further speculation about his motive requires more substantiation.

  5. aletho, Greenwald is a hasbara guy because by detailing peripheral matters and so avoiding the obvious – and it is obvious – core issue of Iran not giving USrael the nuke false flag pretext for which they crave shows intent to distract with this inconsequential reportage.

A nuke false flag would be one where it is proven that Iran has a nuke, which then allows USrael to detonate a Hiroshima sized nuke in some medium sized city of the US.

Relentless Zionist media insistance that Iran merely has a nuke program cannot plausibly be seguayed into doing a nuke false flag on some medium sized US city to thus precipitate the desired nuclear obliteration of Iran.

    • michael,

Of course there are also other possible scenarios outside of the creation of a nuke false flag event.

I do discriminate against writers such as Noam Chomsky who actually imply that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons, that’s where I draw the line.

I don’t see Greenwald’s exposure of MSM warmongering as being just a distraction, though perhaps for yourself it may not have been that illuminating.

Again, I do agree that any discussion that includes why Iran must want nuclear weapons is suspicious. I don’t see a pattern of that sort of thing with Greenwald… yet.

  6. It doesn’t matter whether Iran wants to build a bomb or not, right now, they are a signatory to the NPT, and Israhell is NOT a signatory. According to the Symington amendment, it is ILLEGAL for the U.S. to give ANY FOREIGN AID TO A NON SIGNATORY OF THE NPT! So, why is it that nuclear weapon’s wielding ISRAHELL gets billions of U.S. shekel’s?? Because, the Israeli lobby owns the CONgress and the Senate, and yes, the puppet in the Whore House is also an ISRAELI PUPPET with Rahm Emmanuel’s hands up his arse hole, moving his zionist lips about to and fro (speaks out of both corners of his mouth simultaneously, as you might have noted by now!!)

In any case, the Iranians are pursuing a perfectly LEGAL NUCLEAR POWER program, and they are within their rights to do so. Yep, it’s almost a given they’ll ultimately develop nuclear weapons, but so far, the only nation which has used these goddamned things on anyone else is the Untilted Snakes, bombing the piss out of innocent civilians in Japan when the country was on the brink of capitulating and overthrowing the Emperor to end the war. And I make one more point, the U.S. used these terrible weapons on innocent civilians to make a point with Stalin, no more, no less. Those assholes out there who argue we had to use them, are blowing smoke up your asshole. We did not. So, it’s a hell of a lot of hypocrisy that a NON SIGNATORY of the NPT such as ISRAHELL sit on it’s lying ass and demand the U.S.S.A. attack Iran for them, but it’s even worse that the only country who’s used this shit on innocent lives is the fucking U.S.S.A.

so, there’s the whole gist of this argument. Bitching and arguing about Glenn Greenwald’s true motives is a stupid and moot point. He may be a closeted zionist fuck, but so far, his writings support the other agenda more, and I support what he says. I don’t buy into the ‘logic’ that just because a nation is pursuing a ‘peaceful’ nuclear power program, that the ‘logical conclusion’ is that they’ll make plutonium and then build bombs with that.

So far, the hypocrisy is so steeped that it boggles the motehrfucking mind that Amerikan’s are so fucking ignorant about the root causes of WW-II, particularly with regard to how Japan got goaded into it by BLOCKADES (oh yes, you hear a lot about that from the GOP FILTH who aren’t going to send their fucking jackass rich kids off to die in that war) and we had cut off Japan’s oil and more or less pushed them into attacking the U.S., which sat on it’s dick with plenty of warning about Pearl Harbor, and let that attack happen (as is documented and TRUE).

So, let’s get something straight here. ISRAHELL is NOT A SIGNATORY TO THE NPT, and NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH INSPECTIONS, and in-fact, played a part in MURDERING John F. Kennedy for his attempt to ‘stop’ Dimona from going online and producing the bombs that Israhell would later use to FORCE the middle east to lick it’s motherfucking boots for having them. And, believe it or not, the Central Intelligence Agency with total concert with the MOSSAD, diverted the first shipload of yellowcake to Haifa to start Dimona up in the first place.

if you don’t smell the ‘central rat’ to all this shit by now, your fucking nose is not working, folks!

get a clue, get educated about what really happened that caused the Japanese to attack the U.S. (post BLOCKADE that CUT OFF THEIR OIL!!!) and then, realize that the U.S.S.A. nuked innocent civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki for no other reason than to threaten Russia.

If there’s any MORALITY in any of you, you’ll realize this is a bunch of shit that the Israeli bastards and the totally, wholly CO-OPTED U.S. zionist operated ZOG government is feeding you about IRAN.

Iran has a right to nuclear power. THEY ARE LEGALLY IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE NPT. and ISRAHELL IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN.

wake the fuck up!! I mean it, wake the FUCK UP!
