Israel Apologizes To Pregnant U.S. Reporter Strip-Searched By Soldiers

By Saed Bannoura | IMEMC & Agencies | November 29, 2011

Israeli sources reported that the Israeli Defense Ministry issued an apology for a pregnant American reporter who was forced to be strip searched, humiliated, and forced into a X-Ray search machine, at a military roadblock while heading to Israel from Gaza.

Israel,s Ynet News reported that the reporter, identified as Lynsey Addario, who works for the New York Times, asked the soldiers not to force her to go through the X-Ray search machine because she is pregnant.

In a letter sent to the Israeli Defense Ministry, the reporter said that, despite her pleads, the soldiers forced her through the X-ray machine three times while laughing at her.

After the search, female soldiers took her to another room, and forced her to strip down to her underwear, Ynet News added.

The reporter, winner of a Pulitzer Prize, wrote her letter on October 25, and stated in it that she was never humiliated like this when she worked in more than 60 countries around the globe.

Ynet said that the Defense Ministry investigated the incident and found out that Addario made an official request not to go through the X-ray machine due to her pregnancy before she arrived at the terminal, “but the request was not properly relayed”.

The Israeli Defense Ministry issued an official apology to the reporter for what it described as “the mishap in coordination and the trouble it may have caused”.

The Ministry tried to excuse the behavior of the soldiers by stating that security measures are very tight on the border with Gaza in order “to prevent terrorist attacks from taking place in Israel”, but never explained the motive behind humiliating her.

Ethan Bronner, New York Times Bureau Chief in Israel, said that he is shocked by the way Addario was treated, and how long it took Israel to investigate the incident.

It is worth mentioning that Bronner, known for his support to Israel, has a son who joined the Israeli Army.

  1. ‘Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times photographer Lynsey Addario called Israeli border officials last month to make sure that when she crossed into the country, she wouldn’t be made to walk through an X-ray machine, since she was seven months pregnant and worried about radiation. She was assured she wouldn’t have to. But when Addario arrived, she was forced to walk through the machine three times before being stripped to her underwear for an additional search.

Addario wrote a letter to the ministry after the incident citing the “blatant cruelty” of soldiers who “watched from the glass above the machine smiling triumphantly” and who “laughed” when she “expressed each time that I was concerned with the effect the radiation would have on my pregnancy.” Then a female official had her almost naked. “I asked if this was necessary after the three machine checks, and she told me it was ‘procedure’ — which I am quite sure it is not,” Addario wrote……’

I sincerely believe that she was individually targeted by the Israelis because of her journalism. I also believe that the X-rays were put on the highest intensity to cause the maximum damage to her baby two months before birth. It had to be apparent that she was pregnant, ruling out any pretense of innocence by the IDF/IOF!

This is another premeditated genocidal attack on pregnant women and nothing less! Recall the t-shirts worn by Israelis of a pregnant women with the cross-hairs aimed at her near term baby with the caption, 1 Shot 2 Kills: http://img2.allvoices.com/thumbs/image/609/480/30755770-tshirt-from.jpg

These are the cold-blooded Crimes Against Humanity in violation of the Nuremberg Principles, the legal instrument used to execute Germans after WW2. The US ratified those principles as a treaty, making them ‘the Law of the Land’ and are contained in US military law in FM 27-10 The Law of Land Warfare:

Therefore, those in congress and the Obama administration who excuse these crimes by continuously funding Israel, is guilty with the commission of what is policy of a criminal state committing Crimes Against Humanity and treading on violation on the treaty against Genocide as well. The fact that is an non-issue with the vile power elite is despicable and unconstitutional, what is a blatant conspiracy of high treason!

  2. What happened to this woman is unforgivable, but what is also unforgivable is that she and her colleagues at New York Times have not made the same kinds of fuss and complaints as millions of Americans are being forced to go through x-ray machines that are just as dangerous to adults, at airports all over the United States.

If x-rays are likely to harm a foetus, then they are just as likely to have an effect on the genes of children and adults who may be prone to genetic sensitivities, for want of a better way of putting it. X-rays are harmful, whether they are direct or so-called back-scattered. The growing number of birth defects being reported by those who have been exposed to so-called depleted uranium are similar to those which can be caused by excessive x-ray exposure.

Come on, New York Times, start telling it like it really is for all Americans, not just for one of your pregnant staff-members.

  3. “But when Addario arrived, she was forced to walk through the machine three times before being stripped to her underwear for an additional search. “

They wanted to be sure she didn’t bring in an Iran nuke.

When you have done as many bad things has they have done – you can’t be to careful.
