Mattis: US will send more ‘diplomats’, contractors to Syria

Press TV – December 29, 2017

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says he is expecting to see a larger US civilian presence in Syria, where there are already 2,000 American troops without the authorization of the Syrian government.

Mattis said Friday that the US would deploy more contractors and diplomats to the war-torn country, with which Washington has suspended diplomatic relations.

“What we will be doing is shifting from what I would call an offensive, shifting from an offensive terrain-seizing approach to a stabilizing… you’ll see more US diplomats on the ground,” Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon.

“Well when you bring in more diplomats, they are working that initial restoration of services, they bring in the contractors, that sort of thing,” he added.

“There is international money that has got to be administered, so it actually does something, it doesn’t go into the wrong people’s pockets.”

He also claimed that the diplomats and contractors might train local forces in parts of the country retaken from Daesh to clear improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and hold territory to help ensure that Daesh does not take back territory.

“It is an attempt to move towards the normalcy and that takes a lot of support,” said Mattis.

He did not give any specific information about the number of US diplomats who would serve in Syria and when.

Daesh unleashed a campaign of bloodshed and destruction in Syria in 2014, overrunning considerable expanses of territory.

The same year saw the United States launch a so-called campaign against the terrorists together with a coalition of its allies.

The military alliance had done little in the fight against Daesh, and has instead been repeatedly accused of targeting and killing civilians and hampering Syrian government operations against the Takfiri group.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on November 23 that 2,759 civilians, including 644 minors and 470 women, had been killed in US-led aerial attacks against civilian areas in Syria over the past 38 months.

The American forces support the anti-Damascus Kurdish militants in the north, who have, according to Syria, been seeking to gain more territory under the pretext of fighting terror.

  1. And the Military Industrial Complex has the GALL to complain about Russian interference in the American Election. The USA’s reputation(or, what’s left of it), in the World’s eyes, is in tatters. Credibility ZERO.

  2. Screw Mattis and his country that is illegally inside Syria. One hopes that President Al-Assad will react “Keep your ‘diplomats’ and ‘contractors’ home. While you’re at keeping them home, get your unwelcome, illegal military invaders home as well.”

  3. Why is AMERICA allowing Blackwater to operate at all !? Why is America allowing PRIVATE ARMIES and “Warlords” to proliferate? We pay for an “Army” with our taxes, Gov’t had NO business using OUR money to hire MERCENARIES. Mercenaries become such because of their inability to function in normal society. Mercenaries have high rates of mental illness and instability. Mercenaries have high rates of men who only want to be around men, if you get my drift. The people WE as Americans hire, represent US. Do WE want to be represented by out-of-control MURDERERS !? Gov’t is letting them ruin America’s reputation.
These Mercenaries are great recruiters —– for the “terrorists”

      • American soldiers deaths have never come into consideration by the M.I.C. There’s always more ‘poor boys’ back home to replace them with. The poor don’t matter, to the RICH.

  4. The soldiers know they are training terrorist and deserve everything that happens. But of course America would have a meltdown about our HEROES being killed.

  6. As happened in every country the U.S. has invaded and destroyed, the come in after and “rebuild”, using the money to make their business friends rich using only foreign companies from the “Coalition” nations like the U.S., U.K., France and Germany. They make money bombing, and then more on the occupation, and then even more with the rebuilding. If anyone thinks the U.S. “diplomats” are not simply defending the land seized and stolen from the Syrian people to be given to Kurds and Israeli’s, supplied with American weapons so the oil-rich regions can continue supplying oil to the West with the profits going to the West, is crazy. Half the reason we are over there is to prevent Syria from controlling their own resources and making sure pipelines sending oil to Europe are controlled by the United States and nobody else, especially Russia. Also, Israel has always intended to make Eretz Israel (Greater Israel) a reality. And that means taking land in Syria and Iraq. They already have taken some Syrian territory beyond just the Golan Heights, and now they want more. Jerusalem was small potatoes compared to the land they really intend to conquer. And it won’t be their soldiers dying to conquer that land either. It will be American’s and Europeans.
