‘Racist Discourse’ in Israeli Text Books

on Nov 23, 2011

Alternate Focus interviews Nurit Peled-Elhanan, author of the forthcoming book Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education. Nurit Peled-Elhanan argues that the textbooks used in the school system are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, and that they play a part in priming Israeli children for military service. She analyzes the presentation of images, maps, layouts and use of language in History, Geography and Civic Studies textbooks, and reveals how the books might be seen to marginalize Palestinians, legitimize Israeli military action and reinforce Jewish-Israeli territorial identity.

  1. It’s over two years when I wrote about Israel professor Nurit Peled-Elhanan (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) regarding her speech at the European Parliament in 2005. She told the audience that the so-called “free world is affraid of the Muslim womb”.

  2. This explains so much and answers questions I’ve had for years: Talking to young Israeli soldiers in the West Bank who obviously had no idea about the Nakba, the existence of the Green Line, that the land they were on was Palestinian, that Palestinians were educated, in professions, or ran businesses, that Islam formed a continuous tradition with Judaism and Christianity and honored the Jewish and Christian prophets – all this made me wonder what kind of “Education” they had been subjected to. Now I know. Thankyou Nurit for your openness and clarity. The tightening up on the control and monitoring of school books is indeed frightening.
